edge of mercy

i almost dnf this book several times, because i was bored, then for a second i actually dnf-ed around chapter 31.

i read this scene and it was so extremely silly, it took me out of the story. i had like a quick reality check, like i'm literally reading the stupidest most boring shit ever, for no reason.

well that's a lie, there was a reason: yaoi.

it's not news to anybody, there's so little good queer representation out there, gay people will just watch/read anything that kinda lowkey could be interpreted as gay, even if it's trash or literal queerbait. we are known to be able to enjoy terrible tales by headcanoning them until they're good. i mean, that's how fanfiction got invented, right ?

i started this saga looking for a simple easy read with an enemies to lovers gays storyline, and i will be fair and say it: that's exactly what i got. in fact, if you go back and read my reviews for the first 2 books (here / here), you will see i was genuinely enjoying myself.

the third part tho, that was a challenge. i was bored for most of the book. the two main characters are apart from each other for a very long time, and we only get to see them interact thru text, so almost all the focus of the story wasn't on the romance, but on the conflicts: the government is corrupted, evil billionaires are experimenting on people, society sucks, you know, the usual. plus, there was many many povs on this one, most of them i didn't care one bit about, like i said, i was soooooo bored.

then at some point, almost by the end, the main characters finally get together, kiss, and are gay with each other, etc. and it did satisfy my need for romance, i felt like it was worth going thru the boring parts, just to read the little gay bits in between, and then finally their big moment.

but god, the story goes right back into boring town, and then you get to that little scene i shared the photo of before, and it's so bad. i couldn't do it anymore. i closed the book and stopped reading for weeks. i was so sure i was gonna dnf it. and it would've been good for my book bingo, i do have to check the dnf box ! but i ended up reading it, like i always do (i think the only book i have ever dnf is the second part of the acotar saga).

still i had to use my favorite trick to finish a book i no longer care for, the audiobook, if i can't be bothered to read, or i'm dreading opening a book, i always play the last few chapters on x2, and get it over with. the audiobook narrators always take me out of my misery, i love them to bits !

i didn't even feel like making a collage for it. you can have this rendition of the main couple's vibe instead,

overall, i had fun with the saga, i loved the characters and the dynamics, i'm glad i read it, i hope it gets made into a terrible tv show (supernatural style), so i can enjoy it all over again, but this last one, it wasn't good.

happy i can check the "completes a series" box with this one, because i don't think i want to read more. we might get more of the same universe, but i'm pretty sure it would be from alex and gretel's pov, i would probably be tempted to read it, because i ship them quite a lot, we'll see if i'm in the mood for it, if it ever comes out.
