soundtracks keep music alive

have you ever listened a kid sing a song and be surprised they know it because it's super old (for them, and sometimes even for you) but when you ask them where do they know it from they're confused that yOU know it because "it's a song by alvin and the chipmunks, duh !"

only then i realize how iconic a song must be to survive time like that, to be on the lives of countless generations for complete different reasons.

so here's some of my favorite songs i've rediscovered (or even discovered for the first time) thru soundtracks.

SHREK (2004) (2007)

any movie of shrek is known to have a soundtrack full of bangers but i will name just two,

Holding Out for a Hero is a song by bonnie tyler and it came out in 1984, but anyone my age would for sure know it as I Need a Hero by the evil fairy godmother, from shrek 2 (2004). what's even more interesting here is that when it first came out, it was also as the soundtrack for a movie, footloose !

Immigrant Song by led zeppelin was released for the first time on their album Led Zeppelin III on 1970, but i can clearly remember singing it in front of my dad when i was 10, and his face when he realized i didn't know who led zeppelin (his favorite band, that he definitely played in front of me millions of times) was, and to me it was just snow white's song from shrek the third (2007).

SUPERNATURAL (2005-2020)

Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas has been out since 1976, a beloved classic of rock, that i wouldn't know existed if it wasn't the opening song for the silliest tv show ever made, almost 30 years later !

and just to redeem myself, for my dad's sake, on not knowing led zeppelin as a kid, i obviously ended up very well verse on their music, since i pretty much grew up watching my dad listening and playing them on the guitar almost every day.

so when i realized it was the favorite band of one of my favorites characters of all time, dean winchester, and most importantly, that he gifted a mixtape with his 13 favorite songs to castiel, the character i obsessively shipped him with, i just couldn't help myself but to wonder, what was on that mixtape.

led zeppiling is never actually played on the tv show as a soundtrack, nor is ever mentioned what in on that mixtape, but i know it in my heart, Wish You Were Here (1975) was in there.

 TWILIGHT (2008)

a terrible movie with the craziest most amazing soundtrack ever put together on cinema's history, this could go anywhere, i could pick any song, but i will go for Supermassive Black Hole by MUSE (2006). i know nothing about muse, i have never ever listened to a song by them except for that one, and it is thanks to twilight.

WHITE CHICKS (2004)

that scene it's soooo iconic, you already know which song i'm talking about: A Thousand Miles (2002) by vanessa carlton. i didn't know that song existed before i watched the movie, and now i such a big part of my life, it's literally my best friends and i's song, we text and call each other every time we hear it on the radio or at a store, we sing it out loud every time we are together on a car, we karaoke it every single time we have the chance. it makes me so happy.

LA LLAMADA (2017)

it's a spanish movie, a musical, and a comedy, in which a teenage girl sees god, and he sings Whitney Houston songs to her, specifically Step By Step (1992). the movie is super funny, one of my favorites musicals ever, and even tho i obviously already knew who Whitney Houston was, and i knew most of her extremely famous songs, i didn't know this one, and i remember listening to it non stop back when the movie came out.

PITCH PERFECT (2012)

since this is a musical that only uses songs that already exist, the amount of songs i could put in this is actually quite crazy, they definitely made already popular songs, even more popular, but i decided to choose the one i am still listening to this day: Don't You (Forget About Me)  (1985) by simple minds.

this song is perfect for this entry, and very meta. on the movie itself the characters know this song because it was the iconic song at the end of the iconic movie: the breakfast club (1985). so here i am talking about the best soundtracks of all time, the same way beca and jesse do in the movie.

i also know the song it's about to be the soundtrack for the new pixar movie forgotten island (2026), or at least it was the song they chose for the trailer, so it's pretty cool how we won't let this song die, it's just too perfect ! we must keep using it forever.

TO ALL THE BOYS I'VE LOVED BEFORE (2018)

this movie got me by the neck the day it came out and it didn't let go of me for years, i was obsessed ! !! it's such a nice simple romance, i had so much fun with it. i miss feeling this way about a romance, it's been so long. the main character's mom favorite song is Everybody Wants To Rule The World (1984) by tears for years. i still listen to it, i wouldn't now about it if not for the movie.

 DUMPLIN' (2018)

the whole movie is a love letter to Dolly Parton, and of course i already knew her and her songs, and i already listened to them, but it's also true, right after watching this movie i got way more into it, and stopped being a casual listener, to become a real one.

CHARLIE'S ANGELS (2019)

obviously out of all of the ones, i am talking about the worst one, we all know i like bad movies, but most importantly i love kristen stewart, specially when they let her characters be a little bit gay, so you can bet your ass i will be watching, and enjoying, anything with her in it.

almost by the end, the movie has a dancing + fighting scene with a remix of Bad Girls (1979) by Donna Summer playing in the background, i don't think i have to say it, but no, i did not discover one of the most iconic songs in human history on a terrible 2019 movie, but yes, i started listening to it almost every single day thinking about that scene, for gay reasons.

THE GET DOWN (2016)

a tv show, with amazing music, and insane voices. i would recommend you watch it, it's a musical, so most songs are originals, but there's this beautiful scene, so heartbreaking, and it plays Que LΓo (1968) by willie colon while 2 characters slow dance. it's so good, and i still listen to that song almost every week. i would've never known about it if nor for the show.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: MUTANT MAYHEM (2023)

this movie is perfect, no notes, and so is its soundtrack. you should watch, and listen both from begging to end, and i guarantee you're gonna enjoy it, and rewatch, and re-listen. it's one of my favorite movies. i could choose any song, but i feel like i have to mention No Diggity (1996) by blackstreet, because i don't think it gets as iconic as that.

also because it's not on any of the official soundtrack playlists of the movie, but it does play for a little bit, and i actually discovered this one because of the movie, i need to mention Wake Up in the Sky (2018) by Gucci Mane, Bruno Mars, and Kodak Black.

OFF CAMPUS (2026)

i am now realizing i could keep going forever, i really really love soundtracks, and every time i write about a song i get reminded of another one, i just can't stop ! so i am gonna force myself to finish for the sake of my "posting everyday of october" challenge. i literally have half an hour of this day left, i need to post today not to fail so, let me finish with my most recent one.

there's a lot of music in this tv show, but one i listened for the first time thanks to it is: The Bitch Is Back (1974) by Elton John. the scene where it plays is really nice, and the song is so good, and so much fun ! ! i'm glad i finally know it exists so i can keep playing it when i need a little pick me up.

anyway,

music is so cool <3
