cozy/spooky october recs 🍂

october is my favorite month, not because it starts with my birthday, but because it has the best vibes out of all the months. you can feel the heat leaving, the rain is peaking thru the clouds, the nights start sooner, the ground gets moist, the mushrooms get bigger and bigger, the forest gets brown and red and orange, the worms get out to breathe, the beaches are empty and the sand cold... it's so good. 

so to get you on the mood, let me recommend you my favorite things to engage with this time of the year. 

OVER THE GARDEN WALL (2014) 

this one is a super popular well known mini series, so i'm sure you already know why it's so perfect for autumn. it has the perfect balance of silly, cozy and spooky. it's really funny, but also very eerie and weird. it's really good, one of those things you can clearly see love and care is behind it. 

even if you already watched it, i recommend you do it again and again and again. i always get something new from it, because its different version of me watching it.

MOMO (1973)  

this is one of those books you read when you're 11 and think, well that was fun !! then read again older and wiser and think, damn....

it's actually been many years since i last read it, i wonder what i will learn from it this time. 

let's get silly now tho,

SUPERNATURAL (2005)

this show changed my life back when i was 10, i know i shouldn't have been watching this so young, but it was on the tv ! !! and dean winchester was so hot ! what was i suppose to do ! !!

the amount of love i have in my little heart for this stupid ass terrible tv show is immeasurable. it quite literally raised me, i've rewatched it as many times as is humanly possible, and i've enjoyed getting queerbaited every single time. 

probably impossible, but just in case, if you don't know what it is, it's basically a terribly edited, badly written, extremely corny, with not so good special effects, suuuuuper long tv show, about 2 brothers hunting monsters. 

the first seasons have the vibes of scooby doo, you know, traveling to small towns, killing the monster of the week, fun and simple. but at some point it transforms into a messy storyline, with demons, angels, and god, about the end of the world, and of course our main characters are the chosen ones. it gets messier and more terribly written as it progresses, to the point where the only reason you can keep watching is that love is blind. 

the main reason why this show survived the test of time, is the fandom, who kept it alive for so long i'm pretty sure it's immortal by now. the fanart, the fanfics, the headcanons, the memes, the crazy theories, everything is so good, and so much fun. 

if you haven't yet, i would give it a go, it's silly, easy to follow (at least at the beginning) and just a really good time ! sometimes all you need is a little bit of trash tv.

SCOOBY-DOO SAGA (2002) (2004)

i think it's safe to say, i enjoy the scooby gang in almost all of its forms, it's one of those concepts so cool, we just can't stop making versions of it, like the ninja turtles or spider-man. but ! this two, are favorite scooby-doo movies of all time ! i had these dvds as a kid and i use to watch the second one so many times, it was always kept inside the dvd player. 

i've watched them many times as an adult too, and i still think they're the best scooby-doo movies ever. the casting, the costumes and the aesthetics are perfect, literally no notes. on top of that, it's funny, smart, entertaining, and that scene of daphne getting out of the ball jail with her make up made me gay, and i will forever be grateful for that.

RED VELVET'S 1ST MINI ALBUM: ICE CREAM CAKE (2015)

red velvet are known in kpop for having a spooky vibe, so literally every single one of their albums is perfect for october, i'm just using this opportunity to share this one specifically, because i think the part of the album where you get to listen to automatic and somethin kinda crazy back to back, is one of the best things that has ever come out of inventing  music. 

but for a spookier vibe i would probably go for CHILL KILL (2023), 28 REASONS (2022) or MONSTER (2020).

 DEAD BOY DETECTIVES (2024)

 

i want you to know i actually mean it when i say cancelling this series was actually a hate crime. this is one of the best tv shows ever created, everything is perfect. every single character, every single interaction, every single set and costume, every single word said, hell even the ones left unsaid are perfect. it's pure magic. i'm obsessed. i will never shut up about them, i will keep them alive forever. 

it's about two dead boys trying to avoid getting got by death so they can stay together on earth. they get trapped in a city by a godly magical cat creature, and while they try to get out of it, they decide to solve some mysteries and help a few other ghosts in the meantime. very soon into the story, 2 alive girls join friend group, forming what is probably the best representation of real love and friendship ever shown on tv.  

and i can not stress this enough, even if it's cancelled, even if you're gonna get sad there's no more content by the end, it is 100% worth watching.

SQUAD (2021)

it's a really cool comic about werewolves, it's spooky and pretty. it kinda has the vibes of mean girls (2004), pretty little liars (2010) or forbidden fruits (2026), it's basically a super short read about the horrors of being a girl. it's fun (and gay).
