rating movies i watched (august edition)

SPIDER-MAN BRAND NEW DAY (2026) ☆☆☆☆

this was my raw reaction the second i came out the cinema:  (SPOILERS)

 

now is later, i think i still love it as much, i've seen many commentary of people saying how peter was lowkey evil for inventing the universal thing that kills mutant powers, using the face recognition surveillance (+ how the movie is propaganda trying to convince us is a good thing for the government to control us like that), and how crazy is they portrayed jean as a good guy when she's literally a murderer. 

idk if it's because i am in a complete different political frame and society than the people from the US, but i wasn't bother by those things as much. i will agree i never like it when spider-man works with the police, but sadly this is not the first time it happens, there's many many many versions and universes in which spidey is friendly with police officers (yuck). also i was under the impression the government was the main villain of the movie, or at least i understood it that way. spider-man inventing the evil device (even with good intentions), using the surveillance cameras to get jean (good intentions, again), and trusting the government, are all ultimately bad choices, only terrible things come out of it, and he regrets them. 

i still understand the critiques, and we should for sure talk about them, but i don't feel like they ruined the movie for me. maybe because the propaganda could never work on me, nothing could ever make me like cops, the military, and control, i would be the first in line destroying the cameras if they were all over my city, doesn't matter my favorite hero thinks they're useful. i do see how incorporating these elements as casual or normal in mainstream movies, could make people feel more comfortable with them, and that is not good.... but even if the movie had powerful evil sponsors with terrible intentions or not so hidden agendas, i think there's still love and artistry behind it, you can clearly see there was many people on that team trying to do something good with the tools and limitations they were given, people who love spider-man.

either way, i'm glad the movie started conversations like these, and i'm happy my feed was full people mad about it, because we need to get extremely anti-fascist, every day it gets scarier, we need to talk about, we need to complain, and we need to fight. i've been hoping for a revolution for a very long time. 

jean, on the other hand, i would argue she is portrayed as a villain for almost the whole movie. after we learn why she acted the way she did, we are expected, as an empathetic audience, to understand why she went crazy evil mode, but it's never said what she did was right. she needed to be stopped, and spider-man did stop her. i don't think peter having understating and compassion for his villains is a new thing for this movie, it's a very common theme on spider-man stories to lowkey agree with the villain, or at least recognize you could've also went crazy evil mode if what happened to them, happened to you. offering second chances and never killing people are very much peter parker's rules, and what makes him an actual good guy !

plus her character is clearly a segue to the movies of the new generations of x-men, famously about a school reforming teen mutants that went rogue or a little bit crazy after being tortured/mistreated by everyone. so all of our beloved mutants were at some point some degree of mischievous. jean, being a main character, obviously needs a big flashy hero origin story. 

anyway, i really liked the movie, i had a lot of fun, and it had all of my favorite spider-man things: found family, friendship, love and community. plus despite the horrors, it had a lot of cute, funny little moments, the ones that don't add to the plot, but make peter, peter. a few of my favorite are the way he giggled when bruce tried to jokingly scare him, or him almost throwing up when he realizes the webs come directly out of him, oh and he being all awkward with black widow, or nerding out with ned playing legos. sighs, i love him so much.

LEVITICUS (2026) ☆☆☆

as soon as i saw the trailer, i've been wanting to watch this movie. i thought it had the potential of being a new obsession of mine, the same way the manga "the summer hikaru died" was. i was at least expecting them to have similar vibes, and i guess they did. they're both queer horror, they both happen on a close minded small town, and they both have a monster that looks like the love of your life. but for some reason, i didn't like it as much. i did enjoy it, like i do most queer horror. it might be over used, but i love it when there's a scary monster but the real scary part is homophobia. i think queer people do horror very well, because being queer is actually scary irl, so it's much easy for them to portrait the feelings of true terror. 

both kids, the main characters, were really cute, and well written. i got to like them a lot, which is key for me to enjoy a story. (spoilers>) the concept of being cursed by your local church to be followed forever by a demon that looks, sounds, and acts exactly like the person you're most attracted to, and then as soon as you engage romantically with it, it will kill you, it's insane. the scariest part tho is watching your family, and your love ones, knowingly putting you thru that, just so you stop being gay. the goal is for you to get so scared of the demon, you stop trying to kiss anyone you're attracted to, so i kinda loved the fact that they all died gay (or run away, gay). none of them tried to stop being queer, and the one that did, became insane. it's very well proved, torture will never make you not-gay, just scared and miserable, so it's terrifying how they keep trying to. the idea of a demon is actually quite nice, if you compare it with the horrors queer people have been put thru all over history. 

it was a very good movie, i was just hoping for it to be one of those i keep rewatching forever, but i don't think i will.

THE SHEEP DETECTIVES (2026) ☆☆☆☆

i was not ready to cry as much as i did watching this, i thought it was gonna be a silly kid's movie, turns out it was specifically catered to me. i should've known, i love sheep, i love love and i love revolution.

 

they were so cute ! ! !!!! ! ! !! it was tons of fun, easy to follow, had a very nice teaching, i recommend you watch it <3

CAMP ROCK 3 (2026) ☆

it was trash y'all, it was so so so bad, not amount on love for the originals and nostalgia could've made me rate this movie better. the songs were terrible, the characters weren't likeable, the pacing was a mess. there was no heart, or care behind the making of this movie. 

that being said, i watched it with one of my best friends, whom lives very very far away from me and i only get to see twice a year, and god did we have fun ! !!!  we enjoyed every single second of hating this movie, we cringed and laughed so much (at it, not with it), and lowkey i think that's exactly what this movie was for. i don't think they were trying to make a good movie, i think they were trying to make a bunch of 30 y/o buy a disney+ subscription, so they could watch with their friends and get drunk in the nostalgia of it all (and maybe a few real drinks). jokes on them tho, we pirated it. i don't recommend you watch this, if you miss camp rock, just re-watch the originals.

not movies, but i also watched 2 tv shows, so let me give some super quick reviews for those too, 

MY LIFE WITH THE WALTER BOYS, SEASON 3 (2026) ☆☆

this show is a guilty pleasure of mine, it's really really bad, almost no redeemable qualities. i love it tho, i always rewatch the whole thing every time a new season comes out, i can't get enough of it. it's so trashy, i love me a messy woman as a main character so bad ! yes girl, the world does revolve around you !! !

ADULTS, SEASON 2 (2026) ☆☆☆☆☆

a masterpiece, i thought they wouldn't be able to make something even better than season 1 but they did. these character are so real and so relatable, the situations, the conversations, the themes, the aesthetics, the jokes ! !!! ! truly, a real masterpiece. i haven't feel this way about a show since fleabag (2016) and paquita salas (2016).
