little house on the prairie
i was at work the other day and one of my coworkers said i looked like someone who would enjoy little house on the prairie, i told her i haven't watched it, but i used to really like heidi when i was a kid, and very much enjoyed anne with an e when it came out, since all of those seem so have similar vibes, she was probably right.
she then informed me there was a new version of the show, and she said i had to watch it, so i did. i was right to assume the show had the same vibes as heidi and anne, and so she was right to assume i looked like someone who would enjoy it.
i loved it. there's something so cozy about being a little girl, different, brave and a bit weird, living in the most gorgeous place, in an era where everything was soooo dramatic, and so difficult, specially for an open minded, adventurous woman.
the show itself is just pretty to look at, and the story is all about drama, love, the perks of community, and the ugly parts of society. it was a simple life, but also a hard one.
i had a great time watching, and some of these characters were fine !! like, so pretty, that was a plus ! i'm not good with names but i'm taking about the doctor, the french woman with pants, good eagle's MOM, the general store owner, the sad cowboy with the little kittens !!! oh girl, i was looking ! !!!
i was very sad to see no queer rep tho, i always expect gays if you re-make an old ass tv show, why would you re-make it if not to add a little pizzazz ??? the sad cowboy in question is asking for it, he has bisexual written all over his face.
that actually made me miss anne with an e, i've watched that show so many times, it's so good, it's been years and i'm still angry they cancelled it. it actually has amazing queer rep, i was gonna say "unlike the original", to make the point that if you make a new version, you could always add queer characters, which made me realize, i've never watched the 1985 version, so before i criticize it, i downloaded to see if i liked it.
it was good !! i kinda wish it was longer. it was way more similar to the 2017 version than i was expecting, i don't know why i thought they wouldn't, they're both inspired by the very same books, although the pacing of the older one makes it a bit more boring and rushed, i enjoyed the way one enjoys a fanfic, i already love these characters so it's nice to watch them do anything, not much context needed, but i don't think i would've cared much if this was my first time meeting them, since you don't really get to meet them at all.
i was right about it not being (explicitly) gay, but there's always something about these type of characters, they feel very queer coded to me, like jo from little women: curious, brave, open minded, smart, witty, funny, weird, creative, an outcast on their own small town. positioning yourself so clearly against the rules of society kinda makes you queer, or at least very relatable to the lgbt community.
also,
i think we can all agree anne and diana's friendship is the most romantic friendship ever written, doesn't matter the version.
i wish there were more cute little stories like these, i remember reading fairy oak as a kid and falling in love with the characters and the scenery, my favorite was flox, i didn't know back then, but she is obviously inspired by all these other girls, and their stories. it's kinda fun to see how my taste hasn't changed much, i still get drawn by the same type of tale.
i've been meaning to read them again, i'm scared my adult brain might ruin the memories, the way i remember it, but i also wonder if i could find something new i missed back then.
