opla: an ode to the absurd
i'm not a fan of one piece, not because i don't like it but because i know nothing about it. i've never read the manga or watched the anime. well, nothing is a bit of an exaggeration. i do have friends who are fans and i do live on the internet, so i'm bound to know at least a little bit about one of the most famous pieces of media.
i was aware of the way the main characters looked like and i knew it was about pirates. i also knew the 2 mains reasons keeping me from watching: it's extremely long and a little bit sexist on its fan service. so i was happy to hear about it sometimes thru one of my best friends but never actually engaging with the media myself.
that was until they announced the live action. that cast was simply so cool, they got me interested. plus ! it was very short and i assumed (by the costumes) they were gonna at least water down the creepy fan-service.
little did i know, it was about to become one of my favorite tv shows that year.
you can not imagine my surprise back in 2023 when i started what i thought was a regular pirate show and ended up witnessing the weirdest, most silly show ever.
weird, campy and absurd, these are the ingredients to create the perfect little show. surreal and absurd humor are the only things that actually make me laugh and enjoy a comedy. i usually find most jokes very cringe but i will always have fun watching a normal situation evolve into something silly. and opla is doing just that.
they do everything they want, doesn't matter if it doesn't make sense: plot-lines, costumes, super powers, technologies, rules. anything and everything is valid and allowed. the rule is: there's no rules, it's very cartoon core.
you as the viewer just have to sit back and enjoy. enjoy the crazy plot, the cartoon physics and the absurd super powers these pirates have. wait, is that in the back a giant incredibly muscular man with fluffy bunny ears ? yes, yes it is and it will not be addressed.
the phones are snails !
i'm sure none of this is new to all the fans of the original work but i think there's something very unique in having your first contact with this show thru the live action, because of course they can do all that on the anime (they're cartoons !) but to see it happen with real people is so funny. it makes it so much more camp.
i'm so happy they didn't try to make it edgy or realistic, i'm very glad i get to watch all these silly goofy looking characters do very silly goofy things while taking it very seriously. i love it's never addressed how weird everything is, for the characters in this world whats happening is normal and so we are forced to pretend like what is happening right in front of our eyes is not the craziest, dumbest shit ever.
plus the aesthetics are so fun to look at. the design of everything is so cool for no reason, for the sake of making it fun, and i am having fun !
anyways, season 2 is out if you're interested + i'm in love with her
