whats your favorite genre ?
truth is every time i get asked that, i'm confused. personally, i couldn't care less. i don't like any genre or i like them all ! what i like is a type of story, which could be any genre.
i enjoy character driven stories with lots of dialogues and interactions between characters. i love it when there's at least 4 main characters, to get to know them, to see them interact and grow. i love to re-watch, re-read and find new little details on the body language, the words, the touches, the background interactions. i love to get obsessed over tones, over never spoken words, thoughts, lingering looks, knowing looks, arms brushing, tiny choices like who sat next to who, who did they call first, looked at first, thought of first. what they're wearing. smiles. hands. aaaa (i'm getting giddy just thinking about it),
and all that could exist on a thriller like super 8 (2011) or fear street 1994 (2021) but it can also exist on a queer mafia sport indie book like all for the game (2013). A silly comedy like paquita salas (2016), derry girls (2018), puss in boots: the last wish (2022), bottoms (2023) or mean girls (2004). A literature classic published 158 years ago ? sure ! little women (1968) !! Romances like princess bride (2019), badhaai do (2022), pride and prejudice (2005), the half of it (2020), to all the boys i've loved before (2014) or fruits baskets (1998). Even musicals like mamma mia! (2008) ,the get down (2016), or grease (1978), sport anime: haikyuu!! (2012), a zombie apocalypse story? shoot around (2015). Drama like skam (2015), fleabag (2016), parasite (2019), shameless (2011), over the garden wall (2014), dead boy detectives (2024), 911 (2018), vincenzo (2021), howl's moving castle (2004), rebelde (2022), bad buddy (2021), anne with an e (2017) or hello my twenties (2016). Can i enjoy silly spicy stories ? yes ! the roommate (2020), the never king saga (2022), heated rivalry (2025). Sci-fi ?? alien: romulus (2024), mickey 17 (2025), this is how you lose the time war (2019). Action !! sonic 3 (2024), venom: the last dance (2024), teenage mutant ninja turtles: mutant mayhem (2023), charlie's angels (2019), one piece (2023) or spider-man into the spider-verse (2018). Silly fantasy like supernatural (2005), shadowhunters (2007/2016), dnd: honor among thieves (2023), and not so silly like silver under nightfall (2022), the irresisteble urge to fall for your enemy (2025), willow (2022), avatar the last air bender (2005) or alter cantabria (2023).
so basically, you name a genre, i've enjoyed it.
of course given the nature of the stories i like, they tend to show up in some genres more than others. so i often find myself consuming romcoms the most because they almost never fail to give me what i want. which makes it look like romance is my favorite genre.
but i would never say no to a body horror spooky gore (battle royale 1999, bunny 2019, the metamorphosis 1915, i saw the tv glow 2024) or even a boring pretentious religious metaphor (demian 1919) IF the main focus of the story is the characters and their relationships with themselves and other characters.
sadly, its hard to find character driven stories with an interesting group of characters outside of romance or slice of life stories. so i usually feel drawn to those 2 genres the most.
because you couldn't get me to care about plots (mysteries, war, history with a capital h, magical world building, etc), long descriptions and pretty backgrounds. not to say the stories i like don't have any of that, i'm saying its not the main focus and that's why i can enjoy them.
sighs. idk. i ramble about this in my brain a lot and i felt like writing it down. so here it is.
i guess i lowkey just created my ultimate watch/read list, this was off the top of my head so i'm for sure forgetting favorites here (fairy oak 2007, you deserve each other 2020, daughter of the sun 2018, no.6 2011, woman's world 2018, the road to el dorado 2000, the emperor's new groove 2000, sherk 2001). which reminds me i should make a whole entry dedicated to fairy oak, who raised me and made me who i am today.
: bye !
